Join us for a fun day at Belle Isle and a Poker Run. This event will take us to 5 stops at which each car can draw one card randomly from a new deck. At the final stop, at Sinbad's restaurant, the best five card poker hands will win the cash prizes.
Since the State of Michigan took over ownership and management of Belle Isle, they have invested $500 million in improvement to the new Michigan State Park. So Belle Isle has changed considerably and this is our chance to see the changes.
When you get to the Island if you have a current State Park Permit, you can drive through the left side of the toll booths. The right side is for those without a current State Park Pass. You can purchase a day pass at the time of entrance.
We will begin at the Dossin Great Lakes Museum at 10:00 AM, right when they open. There will be a $5 entrance fee. We will have up to one hour at each stop. Some stops will not need that much time.
The next two stops are almost across the street. They are the Belle Isle Aquarium and the Anna Script Whitcome Conservatory. They share a parking lot.
Stop 4 is the Detroit City Sawmill that goes back to 1905. At that time the sawmill was built there were an estimated 500,000 trees in Detroit. Whenever one of them came down it was taken to the Sawmill and converted into lumber to help build the up-and-coming city.
Stop 5 will be the Bell Isle Nature Center.
We will have other stops such as at the Casino and look in the windows at the beautiful building, used as a meeting place and wedding venue. Time permitting, we could stop at Sunset Point on the East End of the Island, and at the Livingstone Memorial Lighthouse on the West End, which has the only marble lighthouse on the Great Lakes. We may briefly stop at the Belle Isle Boat Club, look at the building from the driveway and I can share some stories with you.
No trip would be complete without a meal. We will conclude our day with dinner at Sinbad’s Restaurant at 100 St. Clair St., which is just 2.7 miles East of Belle Isle. Watch for speed bumps.
If anyone is looking for a morning breakfast, there is a Wendy’s ½ mile West of the Belle Isle entrance road and a McDonalds just over a mile East of the Belle Isle entrance road.
Please sign up to this event on our website so we have an idea on who will be attending. I may also send some further trip details to those who will be in attendance.
